While some of the days are beginner-friendly, most require a good level of fitness, as you should be prepared to walk 6–8 hours per day with altitude changes. If you’re unsure, feel free to contact us. We’ll provide detailed information about trail difficulty and, if this itinerary isn’t a good fit, we’ll recommend the best options based on your experience and preference.
As soon as you hit the trail, there will be no access to mobile network. Be sure to prepare in advance and take this opportunity to cherish the precious moments of connecting with nature and your fellow hikers.
We recommend packing light while ensuring you bring essential items such as sturdy hiking shoes, a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, and a daypack to carry everything. Also sleeping bag and mat, but this and heavy stuff will be carried by horse. After booking your tour, you’ll receive a detailed packing list along with other important trip preparation details to help you get ready.
The Tobavarchkhili trek in Georgia is considered moderate to demanding, and is best suited for active hikers with good physical fitness and some experience with multi-day hiking tours. You’ll be walking 5 to 8 hours per day, covering up to 12 km daily, with elevation gains and losses between 600-1000 meters. The route includes rocky, muddy, and uneven terrain, river crossings, and some steeper climbs, especially near Okhoje Pass (2750 m) and the descent through the Magana Valley, where trails can become slippery in wet conditions.
While the Tobavarchkhili Lakes hike involves some narrow and exposed paths, the trail is non-technical and fully walkable with proper gear and focus. If you have a fear of heights, it’s good to know that some sections run above drop-offs, but they are not dangerous if taken slowly and carefully.
This trek is ideal for adventurous hikers who enjoy long walking days and wild landscapes. Though it’s challenging in parts, it’s very doable for fit beginners who train in advance. The highland route remains mostly between 1800 and 2700 meters, below the threshold for altitude sickness, so Diamox isn’t typically needed, just stay hydrated and pace yourself. Porters with horses carry the heavy gear, so you’ll hike with just a light daypack.
We recommend using trekking poles and sturdy hiking boots with a strong grip for safety and comfort on this remote Caucasus hiking trail. The minimum age is 16, and teens should have prior hiking experience or strong endurance.
The best time to hike the Tobavarchkhili Lakes trek is from late July to mid-September, when most of the trails are free of snow, wildflower meadows are in full bloom, and the weather is relatively stable. Expect daytime temperatures between 10-22°C (50-72°F), but nights can be cold, and sudden storms or early frost are possible, especially above 2500 m, so pack for all conditions.
